Welcome - find out what makes Sung Wing Chun so great
The majority of our students usually come from one of two groups; those who are new to martial arts and those who have had substancial experience in wing chun or other fighting arts. What both groups have in common is that neither are looking for a quick fix self defence method. We aim to teach you an efficient system of movement which will improve your balance, coordination and power generation which will affect your body use in daily life as well as for fighting. There are no quick fixes so what we teach might not suit everyone, but we can guarantee we are like no other wing chun club in the UK because of what we offer:
1. We are only a small club but we have three teachers each with over 15 years experience. You will not get this in any other club at a similar level of quality.
2. Our wing chun is very powerful, efficient and effective and we are committed to passing it on with as much one to one teaching as possible.
3. Our expertise is in teaching how to use your body efficiently. Our internal martial arts approach draws on the experience of thousands of years of Chinese research as well as modern scientific and physiological study.
4. We are friendly and approachable, as are our students. Everyone is welcome and will be be treated with respect.
5. We attract students from around Yorkshire and the UK; whilst many have no martial art experience over half have extensive wing chun experience and a handful have black belts in various arts. They appreciate our radically different approach to how to use your body and apply it in fighting.
6. We are not a keep fit class. There is no mindless pounding on a punch bag as a mindful approach to power development is our aim.
7. We teach genuine Chu Shong Tin Wing chun, in a pure manner which is unique in the UK.
Our first priority for new students is to bringing mindfulness to your movements, awareness to your tension and teaching you a method of how to release it. As the body frees itself of tension, you start to let go of your shoulders and arms, holding your neck and the tightening of your back and there is a resultant increase in the power which you can generate. Instead of using your arms to push and pull, you learn a new method of movement involving releasing your body mass and joint rotation. The potential power of this method is astonishing, but it take diligent practice to acheive.
Wing chun is a devastating martial art, but we at Sung seek to use the art to test how well we are using our bodies. We aim to master the art of free movement of our bodies even when we are under pressure (attack). Done this way, wing chun becomes a tool for you to attack and defend with ease.
We have a methodolical approach to teaching, but no two people are the same. It is our job to help each student to understand how they can use their bodies as efficiently as possible, so we make sure we spend lot of time showing, adjusting and testing students. It helps that we have three passionate teachers.
If Sung Wing Chun interests you, please get in contact. To get the benefits of training ideally you will be able attend at least once a week and can dedicate some time between classes to practice what we have shown you. We have a very friendly informal class and are always looking for students intestested in this method of training.
No Experience of Wing Chun?
At your first class you will spend time with an instructor who will explain the principles of the art and introduce you to the Sil Lim Tao form. This form contains the majority of the movements of wing chun. Over a period of time we will refine your movements, show you how they help generate power using little effort and at the appropriate stage integrate you into the group exercises undertaken by the class. During every lesson we aim for each student to spend approximately 20 minutes with one of our instructors, so we can tailor our teaching to your development.
Previous Wing Chun Experience?
Most wing chun from the Ip Man lineage share many common traits and similarities, however it is likely that unless you have practiced Chu Shong Tin method before you will not be familiar with our training methods. If you genuinely wish to practice and explore this method you are very welcome to join us. Should the style you previously learned significantly differ from what we practice, over the course of several weeks our instructors will demonstrate the key principles of our system so you can understand why we believe it is so effective. During this induction period you may join the main class exercises and chi sau practice. During every class we aim for each student to spend approximately 20 minutes with one of our instructors, so we can tailor our teaching to your development.

I was expecting a room full of sweaty aggressive men but what I found was a mixed group of people who were friendly and clearly dedicated to what they were doing. What really impressed me on the first visit though was how powerful Mark and Dan are. They seem to be able produce power withour hardly any movement and it is impossible to feel it coming. I was not sure when I saw the videos online, but clearly they can do it. I have practiced a lot of arts before, but I have never felt so helpless as when Mark got his hands on me. I am so glad I have found Sung Wing Chun - from D
I found the session interesting. Sung Wing Chun is not just a Martial System.. It has helped me improve my wellbeing and gave me focus In Life and I will be practicing this System. I may not practice forms as much but I have realised the importance of standing practice... Listening to my body in a conscious, calm state trying to connect with my body and gain access and better control. I hope there will be more sessions like this to come. - from R (kickboxing blackbelt)
Excellent teachers each with their own understanding and their own method of transferring that understanding to their . A good mix. Keep up the good work guys - from K
Hi guys, it's been a while. I just wanted you to know I'm still practising (as best I can) the bits I've learned from you so far. I'm training quite a lot in Leeds at the moment, and the principles, standing practice and ways of moving that you've shown me continue to grow and feed into what I do here. It's opened new areas of my wing chun that I could not have imagined before and given me a fresh boost, as well as an edge in my chi sau :) So I owe you my gratitude. I'll come back and catch up as soon as I have time. - From C (wing chun instructor)
Mark, Daniel and Jonathan are three excellent teachers who together 'run' Sung Wing Chun. They themselves are well trained, travelled to Hong Kong for 7 years to train at Chu Shong Tin's kwoon and are still actively training amongst themselves to upgrade the level of their skills. Besides that they are kind and do their utmost in supporting their students. I always feel very welcome and enormously supported when attending the classes and private lessons. Besides the lessons they provide me with applicable guidance at how to develop my abilities while being at home in The Netherlands in between my time in Sheffield. From R
I really love what the three of you are doing in Sheffield for Chu Shong Tin Wing Chun. Sung is a great club. I enjoy every second I spent with you and the other students of Sung. I love the fact that Sung is about Wing Chun and not about money or making a living. I love that with this attitude you manage to attract the right people, the right people to be on a journey into Wing Chun and to have fun with. From O
