Reflection on our first two years at Sung

11/27/2016
It very difficult for a small club like Sung to exist when most other martial art clubs are run like businesses. It is easier to give students what they think they want (not what they need), sign them up to direct debits and keep them mindlessly busy. It is therefore slightly amazing to me that we have managed to grow into a real family of enthusiastic wing chun practitioners. To be part of bringing together such a great group of people from different backgrounds is an achievement which will stay with me forever.

The past year
We have had some good successes this year;

  1. Students are moving on, developing and learning the chum kui form.
  2. The idea of 'sung' is leaking into all areas of student life;
  3. It is really good to see several female students training hard and really developing. This art should be open to both sexes but unfortunately some of the male posturing of other martial arts puts a lot of women off from first attending a class.
  4. Our website has had almost 16k hits in the last year and the youtube channel uploaded to celebrate our lineage has had nearly 100,000 views.

The coming year
  1. It is my hope that we can attract more women to the club.
  2. We will push on with working on balance and kicking.
  3. Those committed students in their 3rd year will commence learning the Bil Jee form.
  4. We (instructors) have been invited to teach a seminar at a CST club in Prague in 2017.
  5. Hopefully we will attract other CST lineage teachers and students to attend our club to pass on their knowledge to us all.
  6. We will upload training videos to YouTube of how we train.

This is a great journey we are one, and I am proud to be on it with Mark, Jon and all of our students. As we always say we are all learning, we are all students, some of us are just a little bit further down the road. The harder we each train, the better we all get.

Thank you
